The source set is the product
In a research platform, the value of an assistant comes from the quality and scope of the sources it is allowed to draw on. A curated, reviewed record set makes an answer checkable; an open-ended one does not.
Citations as navigation
Citations are often treated as a footnote. They work better as navigation: a citation identifier that opens the underlying record turns an answer into an entry point to the material behind it.
- Every record carries a stable citation identifier
- Every answer names the records it draws on
- Every citation links to the full record
Saying nothing is a valid answer
An assistant restricted to approved sources will regularly meet questions those sources do not cover. Stating that clearly is more useful than an answer that reads well and cannot be traced.
